Balanced Diet

Tips For Balanced Diet

You must be aware of your body’s vitamin and mineral requirements as well as the nutritional values of the food choices you make prior to selecting a daily food menu. To ensure that you are following a balanced diet, make sure that:
  1. Your food choices originate from the five main food groups viz. fruits, vegetables, cereals and pulses, dairy, poultry, fish and meat products.
  2. Since our body requires over 40 nutrients including vitamins, minerals, water, protein, carbohydrates and fats; it is important that we eat a variety of foods especially within vegetables and across the food groups. For example while vegetables like capsicum provide us with Vitamin C, spinach is rich in iron; both foods from the same food group but catering to different nutritional needs.
  3. Your diet ensures that your Body Mass Index (BMI) is within the recommended range.
  4. You follow low fat recipes, eating foods that are low in saturated and trans fat.
  5. Sugar, oil and alcoholic beverage consumption is restricted.
  6. Your food has low sodium content
The means used to grow, store and prepare food also plays an important in enhancing or depleting the nutritional value of the food.

The human body requires various types of nutrients in order to keep the body healthy and fit. These nutrients should be taken appropriately in our diet. The diet that we follow should be balanced. Balanced diet is a diet, which provides all the nutrients needed by the body in correct proportions.
This means that it should contain all the types of nutrients in the required quantities. Each meal should contain sources of carbohydrates (such as cereals), proteins (such as pulses), fats (such as cooking oil), vitamins and minerals (such as variety of vegetables).
Some of the common foods and their composition are given below:
 Food Carbohydrate Fat Protein
 Bread (Roti) 52% 3% 9%
 Rice (cooked) 23% 0.1% 2.2%
 Banana 20% 0.5% 1,0%
 Potato 19% 0.1% 2%
 Peas 16.7% 0.5% 5.2%
 Apples 12.8% 0.5% 0.3%
 Cabbage 5.5% 0.3% 1.2%
 Spinach (Palak, Saag) 3.2% 0.3% 1.6%
 Eggs 0.7% 12% 13%
 Milk 4% 4% 4%
 Butter 0.4% 81% 0.6%
 Cheese 2% 32% 25%
 Meat 0 30% 22%
 Chicken 0 11% 20%
 Fish 0 0.4% 17%

Given below is the recommended daily allowances of energy, proteins and fats:
Group Body Wt in kg Net Energy in k Cal Protein in g Fat in g
 Adult Man 60 2875 60 20
 Woman 50 2225 50 20
 13-15 yrs Boy 47-48 2450 70 22
 Girl 46-47 2060 55 22

In addition, the body also needs fibrous content called the roughage (for digestion) and water. A diet that contains all the above is called a balanced diet.

Balanced diets of moderately active adult Indians

Food Recommended amounts (g per day)
 Adult Man Adult Woman
 Cereals (rice/wheat) 520 440
 Pulses 50 45
 Meat/Fish 30 30
 Egg 1 1
 Milk 200 150
 Oil/fats 45 25
 Sugar/molasses 35 20
Roots and tubers (potato, etc.) 60 50
Green leafy vegetables (spinach, etc.) 40 100
Other vegetables (cauliflower, etc.) 70 40

Energy requirement

A balanced diet should not only take care of the different types of nutrients but also consider the energy requirements of the individual. This is because different people have different lifestyles and varied nature of work. A man with sedentary habits does not require as much energy as the man who is on his feet for most of the day. The energy requirement is measured in terms of calories. The calorie requirement depends on the age, sex, height, weight, occupation and state of health.
 Age Energy required
5 years 6000 kJ per day
11 years 9000 kJ per day
18 years 11000 kJ per day
Adult (normal work) 9600 kJ per day
Adult (heavy work) 12000 kJ per day
Adult (very heavy work) 16000 kJ per day
A young boy of about 15 years requires more calories or energy than an adult man who does not do heavy work. Similarly, lactating mothers require high energy and high protein diet for good lactation.

High Energy Foods

Here is a handy list of high energy foods which you could attempt to integrate into your daily diet. A high energy food can supply your body with additional energy needed to get through the day.

Vegetables

High energy vegetables. The list of vegetables which supply your body with high amounts of energy is exhaustive.
The main foods in the vegetable area which provide high amounts of energy are; sprouts, broccoli, asparagus and spinach.

Nuts

Some nuts are a great energy source and are often very suited to a quick snack. Almonds, peanuts and soy nuts are perfect for this example.

Yogurt

Yogurt is full of vitamin-B, and this vitamin helps your body convert other nutrients into energy. You should not eat excessive amounts of yogurt due to the fat content. You could eat a nut yogurt to mix the yogurt and nut energy foods into one snack.

Eggs

Eggs are a great source of energy, and this food will supply a high amount of protein throughout the working day. Some experts advise not to eat more than three eggs a week, so try to mix your weeks food plan up with other high energy foods.

Orange & Other Fruit Juice

High energy foods - oranges.Vitamin C can help to reduce levels of fatigue, which will keep you going all day long. As with many other vitamins, too much vitamin C can be bad for your body, so drink these juices in moderation.
Citrus fruits are also very good in providing vitamin C, a great example of this is the main ingredient in the fairly new lemon detox diet.

Beans & Lentils

Beans and lentils are a great source of potassium and carbohydrates. Kidney beans, lentils, baked beans and many others provide a great source of energy for your body.

Seeds

Sunflower and pumpkin seeds are also a great source of energy for your body. These are great as a stand-alone snack, and also combined with other ingredients in nut bars.

Snoring - Reasons Behind Snoring and How to Stop It.

Snoring is a common problem with a lot of people, especially males. This embarrassing difficulty can lead to serious medical conditions.

Snoring is a resonant sound that emerges from the mouth and/or nose during sleep. This sound is the result of a vibration that occurs in the airway. At night, the soft tissues of the airway relax and thus flatten the airway. The air, thus, has to come out with force, leading to the vibration of these tissues. The narrower the airway, the louder the snoring.

Causes of Snoring

Some of the major causes of snoring occur due to problems associated with the respiratory tract due to allergies (hay fever, asthma), medications for allergies and cold and flu. In all these cases, the airway becomes clogged, leading to snoring. Enlarged adenoids or tonsils can also lead to snoring. A disproportionately large tongue can also be a factor. Alcohol consumption is also implicated in snoring since alcohol causes throat muscles to collapse and dilates blood vessels, which can lead to the swelling of throat tissues. Snoring also occurs in the elderly due to weakening of muscles and tissues in the throat.
A person may snore with either the mouth closed or open. If the snoring is with mouth open, then the throat tissues are responsible for the problem. If snoring occurs with mouth closed, then the position of the tongue is a possibility in snoring. Usually people snore when lying on the back. But if a person snores regardless of sleeping position, it could signify a bigger problem and the person could require medical treatment to cure the problem.

Snoring Facts
Snoring is made worse by alcohol or sleeping tablets

Overweight people are more prone to snoring
Sleeping on your back increases the chances of snoring
Colds, nasal polyps and allergies make snoring worse
Older people often snore due to muscular weakness that occurs with age
Medications may cause dryness or minor irritation of the nasal passageways and increase  the incidence of snoring
A larger than usual uvula can limit airflow

Injuries to the nose that result in a deviation of the septum may result in snoring
Smokers are twice as likely to snore

Self Help Ideas to prevent or minimize snoring

1.If you're overweight try to lose some of it

2.Avoid alcohol and rich foods like chocolates before bedtime and eat healthy foods generally
3.Stop smoking

4.Try raising your head by putting pillows under it
5.Sleep on your side. Some people sew a tennis ball on the back of their night clothes to help them
6.
Blow your nose before going to bed.

Problems of Snoring

If none of the remedies work, consult a doctor.Although snoring is a problem not regarded as serious by most people, it can lead to very serious medical conditions like heart disease, stroke, headaches during the day, heartburn and a weakened immune system. Probably the most serious of all the conditions that snoring can cause is sleep apnea. In this condition, breathing stops during sleep. Sleep apnea can be fatal -- the sufferer may die during sleep due to discontinuation of breathing. Other problems due to sleep apnea can be traced to the buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood leading to heart disease, stroke and brain damage.

Night Shift Job – Tips For Better Sleep

There are millions of people who work the graveyard shift. They start at 8PM at night and end their shift at 5AM in the morning. Working a graveyard shift can be challenging because most everyone else is awake during the day having fun, eating and working. Many times graveyard shift workers want to also stay awake during the day interacting with friends and family. There are healthy ways of helping yourself to stay awake if you work a graveyard shift.

Sleep as much as you can during the day. For example, if you get home by 5:30AM go straight to bed and sleep at least eight hours. Eight hours of sleep starting at 5:30AM would be till 1:30PM in the afternoon. You can socialize or do anything that you need to do between 1:30PM till 7:30PM at night. So you would be awake for six hours during the day.

To help you get sleep during the day purchase some curtains such as cellular shades that would keep the room dark. Eat regularly. You are more likely to be tired if you are hungry. Make sure you have three main meals and snacks every so often. Having a regular pattern for eating will help keep your belly full and your mind alert.

Play music at work. You can either bring a radio or wear headphones depending on what is allowed at your workplace. Play upbeat music at work. Soft relaxing music can make you feel drowsy and lead you to fall asleep.

Splash your face with cold water to keep you awake. Cold water will wake up those relaxed muscles that are ready to fall asleep. You can do this every hour or as often as you if needed.

Sleep is very important to over all health. The shift worker is especially susceptible to sleep problems stomache and digestive issues, etc. Because of the way we are designed the body regulates itself based on the rhythm. At night our digestive system slows down, hormone levels change and the body makes melatonin (the sleep hormone), blood pressure, heart beat etc. change at night. So it is important to be more careful what you eat and drink, also keep active during breaks at night and have a light meal before you go to bed. No caffene for at least 4 hours prior to sleep and no exercise or exciting movies, etc. before bed time.

Tips to Fall Asleep Faster and Stay Asleep Longer

How many times have you found yourself lying awake in bed, long after bedtime, just
waiting to drift off - or worse, trying to force yourself to sleep? Most of us will have trouble getting to sleep at one time or another, and taking medications to aid sleep is not usually an appealing option. The next time you’re having trouble shutting off your mind and getting to sleep, you can help the situation with no chemicals using just a few simple steps.

1. Don’t exercise for at least 3 hours before bed. Exercising increases blood flow and wakes you up. Getting in your daily workout just before bedtime will keep your heart rate elevated and make it difficult to calm down enough to sleep.

2. Keep the TV and computer off for 30 to 60 minutes before bed. The light from the screens can trick your body into thinking that it’s still daylight and not time for sleeping. Read, write in a notebook, or listen to soothing music at a quiet volume just before bed.

3. While we’re on the subject of food: try not to eat for at least four hours before bedtime. Eating too close to sleeping time can lead to heartburn, which is likely to keep you awake most of the night.

4. You’ve heard this one before, but it’s one of the best pieces of sleep advice around: wake up and go to sleep at the same time every day. Your body will become conditioned to follow this schedule, meaning that you will become tired and be able to fall asleep at a predictable time every night.

5. Don’t read, watch TV, or work in bed. Associating waking activities with your sleeping space can confuse your body and make it more difficult to use that space for sleeping.

6. Try telling yourself a story in your head. Make it a calm and cheerful story and focus on nothing else. This will help you to block out the day’s events and all of the other thoughts that can swirl around in your mind and make it difficult to find sleep.

7. Set the stage for sleep. Make your sleeping space as quiet, dark, and pleasant as possible. Clean sheets, room-darkening drapes, and a pair of earplugs will all help to make the room as sleep-conducive as possible.

8. If all else fails, there are some very good self-hypnosis MP3s out there which can help you get to sleep peacefully and naturally. The relaxation methods you learn from these programs can help you learn to fall asleep on your own even without listening to the program.

9. Nicotine is a stimulant. That bedtime cigarette may be what’s keeping you up at night. Don’t smoke before bed or if you wake up in the middle of the night.12. Your body’s systems are slowed and sluggish at lower temperatures, so sleeping in a cooler room may do the trick for you. Many people find it impossible to sleep when the room is too hot; turn on your air conditioner, take off your socks, or turn on an overhead fan to get your bedroom to a comfortable sleeping temperature in the summer.

Long-term insomnia may be indicative of a medical problem, so see a doctor if your sleep disturbances continue for more than a couple of weeks.
